Preserving the Golden Era
SoulAndDance.com is a labor of love. It is a dedicated digital archive designed to celebrate and document the artists, albums, and singles that defined a generation.
From the high-energy pulse of New Jack Swing to the sophisticated melodies of smooth soul and dancefloor R&B, we focus on the “golden era” of the 1980s and 1990s. While many sites focus on the hits, we aim to go deeper—cataloging the rare B-sides, the legendary producers, and the deep cuts that shaped the landscape of modern music.
What is New Jack Swing?
New Jack Swing was the sound that dominated R&B from the late 1980s into the early 1990s. Pioneered by production visionaries like Teddy Riley and Babyface , it fused the street-level energy of hip-hop beats with the vocal melody and emotional depth of classic R&B.
The result was a harder, more rhythmic take on soul—still warm, still emotional, but with a groove that demanded you move. Artists like Bobby Brown , Janet Jackson , Johnny Gill , Shanice , and Color Me Badd brought this sound to the mainstream, creating a global soundtrack that sounds as fresh today as it did thirty years ago.
The Vision
This site is currently in an active state of growth. We are building a comprehensive resource for music lovers and historians alike. Our roadmap includes:
- Artist Features – In-depth profiles with full discographies, including every single and album release.
- Monthly Video Playlists – Curated selections organized by genre, mood, and era.
- Get Up and Dance – A spotlight on uptempo classics and the harder edge of New Jack Swing.
- Quality Time – Dedicated space for the finest slow jams and soul ballads.
- Archives – A focus on rare releases and the “lost” tracks of the 90s.
A Global Perspective
While my other project, Buzz FM, focuses on the specific radio history of Birmingham, Soul and Dance is a global archive. Whether the sound originated in Harlem, Los Angeles, London, or beyond, if it has soul and it moves the floor, it has a home here.
Contact & Collaboration
This is a personal hobby project and a work in progress. If you have corrections, rare discography information, or just want to talk about 90s R&B, I would love to hear from you.
