By All Means
By All Means represents the gold standard of the “sophisticated soul” trio, a group that brought a high level of musicianship and vocal interplay to the turn of the decade. Consisting of James Varner, Lynn Roderick, and Billy Sheppard, the group was a self-contained creative unit that wrote and produced much of their own material. While they first emerged in 1988, their work at the dawn of the 90s solidified their status as premier torchbearers for the “grown and sexy” R&B movement.
The 1990–1992 window saw the group reach an artistic peak with the 1990 album Beyond a Dream. This project produced the timeless soul anthem “Don’t You Give Up” and the sleek, rhythmic “I’d Rather Be Lonely,” tracks that became staples of the era’s sophisticated soul landscape. Characterized by Lynn Roderick’s emotive leads and the group’s impeccable, jazz-tinged harmonies, their sound prioritized melodic elegance and organic textures. For the archive, By All Means stands as a vital link between classic vocal traditions and the polished Urban Contemporary sound of the early 90s.
