James Taylor
James “J.T.” Taylor is the voice that defined an era of global celebration, serving as the lead vocalist for Kool & The Gang during their legendary 1979–1988 run. When he transitioned to a solo career at the dawn of the New Jack Swing era, he successfully traded the group’s funk-pop aesthetic for a more modern, rhythmic R&B sound. His 1989 solo debut, Master of the Game, proved his individual staying power, anchored by the sophisticated hit duet with Regina Belle, “All I Want Is Forever.”
During the pivotal 1991–1992 window, Taylor reached a solo creative apex with the album Feel the Need. The project was a cornerstone of turn-of-the-decade soul, producing the massive hit “Long Hot Summer Night.” The track became a definitive anthem of the period, perfectly blending Taylor’s smooth, seasoned delivery with the era’s penchant for gospel-inflected R&B and rhythmic club grooves. For the archive, J.T. Taylor represents the rare artist who successfully evolved across three decades, maintaining his status as a premier soul stylist while embracing the polished, high-fidelity production of the early 90s.
