Jodeci
Jodeci is the definitive group of the Hip-Hop Soul era, a quartet that infused the polished New Jack Swing movement with raw gospel vocals and a street-level aesthetic. Comprised of brothers DeVanté Swing and Dalvin DeGrate, alongside K-Ci and JoJo Hailey, the group arrived from North Carolina to Uptown Records and immediately redefined the R&B leading man. Their sound, characterized by DeVanté’s innovative, bottom-heavy production and K-Ci’s gritty, impassioned leads, bridged the gap between the sanctuary and the street.
The 1991–1992 window saw the group achieve total genre dominance with their debut masterpiece, Forever My Lady. The album produced three consecutive #1 R&B hits: the title track, “Stay,” and the iconic “Come and Talk to Me”. This solidified their reputation for vulnerable yet masculine balladry. During this period, Jodeci fundamentally shifted the fashion and attitude of the genre, trading traditional stage wear for the boots and leather of the hip-hop generation. For the archive, Jodeci represents the catalyst for the 90s R&B revolution—a group that proved harmonic perfection and rhythmic grit were the ultimate “Forever” combination.
