Kathy Sledge
Kathy Sledge built her reputation as the youngest member and lead voice of Sister Sledge, the Philadelphia vocal group she formed with her sisters. Her lead vocals carried the group’s landmark Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards productions, including “He’s the Greatest Dancer,” “Lost in Music,” and the 1979 anthem “We Are Family,” which earned the group a Grammy nomination and became one of the defining records of the disco era. She remained the group’s lead voice until 1989, when she left to pursue a solo career.
Sledge signed to Epic Records and released her solo debut album, Heart, in 1992. The lead single, “Take Me Back to Love Again,” topped the US Hot Dance Club Play chart, while deeper album cuts such as “Reason For This” showed a more intimate, ballad-driven side of her voice away from the dancefloor productions she was best known for. She continued to record dance and house material through the 1990s and 2000s, including the 1995 Stevie Wonder cover “Another Star” and a guest vocal on Robert Miles ’ international hit “Freedom” (1997). In 2021 she launched “Sister Sledge featuring Kathy Sledge,” carrying the group’s legacy forward on the road.
