Tony Toni Tone
Tony! Toni! Toné! redefined the R&B band for the modern era, blending the raw musicianship of their Oakland roots with the digital precision of the turn of the decade. Comprised of brothers D’Wayne Wiggins and Raphael Saadiq along with their cousin Timothy Christian Riley, the group was a self-contained powerhouse. While they emerged in 1988 as part of the new wave of rhythmic soul, their evolution into the early 90s saw them become the genre’s most innovative stylists, successfully reviving the “live band” aesthetic within a modern production framework.
The 1990–1992 window saw the group reach a creative breakthrough with their multi-platinum album, The Revival. This project produced a string of definitive hits, including the high-energy dance anthem “Feels Good” and the sophisticated, nostalgic ballad “It Never Rains (In Southern California).” Their ability to master various styles—from the bluesy grit of “The Blues” to smooth mid-tempo grooves—made them a mainstay of both R&B and Pop radio. For the archive, Tony! Toni! Toné! stands as the essential bridge between the classic funk traditions of the past and the neo-soul movement of the future, proving that technical skill and organic instrumentation remained vital in the early 90s.
