You And Me

“You And Me” comes from the same small production camp responsible for the album’s opening cut, “Any Time, Any Place” - all three tracks (1, 3 and 7) are credited to producer Cirocco, alongside co-writers Selandra Wright and “Big” Dave Repace, sitting apart from the rest of Inner City Blues, which Robert Palmer and Paul Ring produced. It’s a quieter, more intimate corner of the record, distinct even within an album built almost entirely around hushed, late-night balladry.

Like the rest of the album, it passed through mixer Barney Perkins and mastering engineer Wally Traugott on its way to C-Four Records - the same pairing responsible for the pristine, candle-lit sound that makes Inner City Blues such a prized find for Quiet Storm collectors. Filed among the archive’s slow jams, “You And Me” is a lower-profile companion to “Any Time, Any Place” rather than a stand-alone highlight, but it’s cut from the exact same cloth. Perkins mixed a Motown quiet storm record three years earlier too - Dee Harvey’s title track “Just As I Am”.
